Meet Dr. Elizabeth Monaghan, who joined the INLIV team of Executive Medical Assessment physicians in 2013.
Dr. Elizabeth Monaghan received her BSc in biochemistry (with distinction) at University of Lethbridge, and a full scholarship to McGill University for one year as a visiting student in the Centre d’études canadiennes-françaises. She was awarded her Medical Degree at the University of Alberta, with a specialization in Family Medicine (CCFP) from the University of Calgary.
Her career has included rural, remote, and urban experience in both community and hospital settings. Since 1992, Rockyview General Hospital has been her second home and her work there involved general medical, obstetrical, and neonatal ICU care. Her commitment to care was acknowledged with a RGH Physician Staff Award in 2010. Dr. Monaghan has also been a member of the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network since 2007. She worked as an assessment physician for the Alberta Medical Association’s Physician and Family Support Program from 2012-2018. She has completed most of the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Leadership Institute courses and is eligible for CCPE designation (Canadian Certified Physician Executive).
Dr Monaghan has enjoyed clinical teaching and learning in office and hospital settings. In 2011, she was accepted to the Master Teacher Program at Cummings School of Medicine, University of Calgary and subsequently completed the Teaching Scholars in Medicine Program. She maintains a teaching contract with the medical school which involves teaching across the curriculum – clinical skills, facilitation of small group learning, some lecturing, mentoring, academic review. Since joining in 2011, she has been honored to have been named to the “Medical Students’ Honor Roll for Teaching” and a recipient of the “Associate Dean’s Letter of Excellence in Teaching” each year.
Since joining INLIV in 2013, “Dr. Monaghan has become an invaluable member of our medical team,” says Dr. Wendy Smeltzer, Medical Director for INLIV. “She set up our medical emergency response protocol, is excited to recruit other physicians to our expanding team, and is very dedicated to her patients. Her knowledge, calm demeanor, and innate coaching ability make her an excellent resource for all of our INLIV team.”
Dr. Monaghan feels fortunate to have come to INLIV: “INLIV team care offers the ideal environment in which to offer the high quality medical care we have been trained to deliver but struggle to deliver in other environments. I feel that I can offer my best to patients at INLIV because of the appropriate amount of time with patients, the presence of other multidisciplinary health care providers, and the supportive INLIV team which makes work FUN! At the end of the day, my work satisfaction comes from knowing that I am set up with the appropriate resources to provide my best to patients,” says Dr. Monaghan.
Her personal interests include diverse travel destinations, languages, music, dance, cooking, baking, gardening, walking, biking, skiing, and even a little golf (mostly to enjoy the flowers!).
